Residents advised to get set for Hurricane Milton
The Miami-Dade County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) continues to monitor Hurricane Milton, currently a Category 4 storm.
Residents are urged to continue monitoring the storm and complete their personal hurricane preparations. Based on its current track, tropical storm force winds (TSFW) from Hurricane Milton could begin to impact South Florida by Wednesday morning. At this time, residents are urged to:
- Gather hurricane supplies now if not already done. Make sure three days of supplies (e.g., non-perishable food and water) are on hand for each person in the household;
- Put up your hurricane shutters now;
- Fill your vehicle’s gas tank with gasoline. If you fill extra gas containers with gasoline, make sure you store in an appropriate container and in a safe area of the home;
- The E. Darwin Fuchs Pavilion, located at 10901 Coral Way, Miami, FL 33165, is a pet-friendly evacuation center for mobile home residents who voluntarily wish to relocate. The evacuation center is open as of 10 a.m. today. For individuals who are in need of assistance for transportation to the Fuchs Pavilion, Miami-Dade Transit will be providing transportation. Please call the 311 Contact Center to coordinate your pick-up location, or complete this form online. The Department of Transportation and Public Works is prepared to provide services from 10 a.m to 10 p.m. daily, as needed.
- Your home, yard and construction debris should already have been properly secured. Any objects that hurricane winds could blow about should have been tied down or brought indoors (garbage cans, patio furniture, garden tools, toys, etc.);
- Do not trim trees or shrubs at this time. The County’s 13 Trash and Recycling Centers have extended their operating hours and will remain open until 7 p.m. today;
- Miami International Airport remains open but many airline carriers have canceled or will cancel flights. Travelers should contact their airline carrier to confirm flight information;
- Metrorail, Metrobus and Metromover continue to operate on a regular schedule.
- Drawbridges will be locked down for boat traffic beginning at noon today;
- Non-essential County government offices will be closed starting Wednesday, Oct. 9 until further notice, except for essential staff;
- Private businesses are urged to send employees home immediately;
- Public marinas are open; and
- Residents are reminded that if a boil water order is issued, water should be boiled for one full minute before drinking it.
All residents are urged to stay tuned to radio and television broadcasts for further details of the storm movement. Miami-Dade County officials are closely monitoring the situation and will issue further advisories as they become necessary.
The EOC continues to operate at a Level 2, (partial activation status). Under Level 2 status, DEM staff and lead county and partner agencies are required to report to the EOC.
The 311 Contact Center has extended hours of operation from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. To reach the 311 Contact Center, residents can dial 311 in Miami-Dade, or 305-468-5900 outside of Miami-Dade County, or 711 Florida Relay. Specialists are taking calls in English, Spanish, and Creole. Residents can access all information about Hurricane Milton at miamidade.gov/milton.
