The South Dade Trail, located within the South Dade Transitway right-of-way, is approximately 22 miles long. It begins, to the south, at SW 344 Street (West Palm Drive) in Homestead and ends at the north end of the train at the Dadeland South Metrorail Station. The trail travels through fast-growing municipalities, including Homestead, Florida City, Cutler Bay, the Village of Palmetto Bay, and Pinecrest. When completed, it will connect to The Underline, a 10-mile shared-use path built under the Metrorail guideway from Dadeland South Station to Brickell Station next to the Miami River. This project aims to create a safe, accessible, multi-modal trail along the South Dade TransitWay right-of-way, enhancing connectivity and improving community well-being.

Additionally, the South Dade Trail runs parallel to the newly launched Metro Express Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service, Miami-Dade County’s first-ever rapid transit connection of the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Program. Because of its proximity to the new Bus Rapid Transit service, the South Dade Trail will reinforce and connect communities to multi-modal transportation, enhancing first and last mile connections; integrating the safe and functional movement of pedestrians and bicyclists along the corridor and adjacent neighborhoods; increasing safety and security; and implementing sustainable design strategies.

As part of the improvements, the project will enhance and implement new connections to adjacent communities, integrate lighting, drainage, and native and resilient landscaping, including an estimated increase in tree canopy of 48%, wayfinding, and some site furniture and equipment.

The trail travels through Miami-Dade County’s Commission Districts 7, 8 and 9. The South Dade Trail is part of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Miami-Dade County Parks and Open Spaces System Master Plan.

Project Timeline

The planning phase has been completed, and the 30% of the design phase has been completed. DTPW is currently moving forward with the design, which includes community engagement. Additionally, DTPW has secured various funding sources, including grants, to finalize the design. The project will be implemented in segments depending on funding for construction activities.
