Employment

Effective Communication
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office will generally, upon request, provide appropriate aids and services to ensure effective communication for qualified persons with disabilities so they can participate equally in Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office programs, services, and activities. Such aids and services may include, but are not limited to, sign language interpreters, documents in alternate format, and other ways of making information and communications accessible to people who have speech, hearing, or vision impairments.
Modifications to Policies and Procedures
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office will make all reasonable modifications to policies and programs to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to enjoy all of its programs, services, and activities. For example, individuals with service animals are welcome in Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office stations and buildings, even where pets are generally prohibited.
Requests
Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office program, service, or activity, should contact a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office ADA Liaison as soon as possible, but no later than 48 hours prior to the scheduled event. If approved, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office will provide auxiliary aids/services for individuals with disabilities free of charge. It is encouraged that the attached Request for Accommodation and Grievance Form be used to request an accommodation. If needed, assistance in filling out the form will be provided by the Human Resources Office. Requests for accommodation should be submitted to the Human Resources Office at 9105 NW 25 Street, Suite 1095, Doral, FL 33172. The ADA does not require the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office to take any action that would fundamentally alter the nature of its programs or services, or impose an undue financial or administrative burden.

Who can file a complaint
This Grievance Procedure is established to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 ("ADA"). It may be used by anyone who wishes to file a complaint alleging discrimination on the basis of disability in the provision of services, activities, programs, or benefits by the Miami Dade Sheriff’s Office. The Miami Dade Sheriff’s Office's Policy Manual governs employment-related complaints of disability discrimination.
How to file a complaint
The following is the mechanism by which individuals may file complaints of disability discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
The complaint should be in writing and must contain the following information:
- Name, address, and telephone number of the complainant.
- The location, office, bureau, or district where the violation occurred.
- A complete statement of the grievance and the facts upon which it is based.
- The desired remedy or solution requested.
- The of any witnesses who can provide supportive or relative information.
Use of the Request for Accommodation and Grievance Form is encouraged. Alternative means of filing complaints, such as personal interviews or a tape recording of the complaint, will be made available for persons with disabilities upon request.
The complaint should be submitted by the grievant and/or his/her designee as soon as possible but no later than 60 calendar days after the alleged violation to:

Assessment:
Upon receipt of the complaint/grievance, the ADA Coordinator shall notify the General Counsel’s Office and consult with an attorney as to the investigation and possible ways of addressing the complaint. An investigation may include meeting with the complainant and/or any possible witnesses.
Upon conclusion of the investigation conducted by the ADA Coordinator (or designee), the ADA Coordinator may recommend a course of action to resolve the complaint. This recommendation will be given to the Undersheriff, who may invoke a course of action to resolve the complaint. Within 30 working days of receiving the complaint/grievance, the ADA Coordinator (or designee) will communicate, in writing or other matter accessible to the complainant, the results of the investigation and the chosen course of action (if any).
A record of the complaint shall be maintained for three (3) years in the General Counsel’s Office.
Use of this complaint procedure is not a prerequisite to the pursuit of other remedies with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
