Data-driven insights help streamline the LIHEAP application process

The Miami-Dade County Information Technology Department (ITD) highlighted its cutting-edge work at The Opportunity Project for Cities Demo Day 2024. This year’s cohort included Akron, OH; Macon-Bibb, GA; St. Paul & Ramsey County, MN; and Miami-Dade, FL, uniting local governments, community organizations and Google.org technologists to co-create digital tools addressing local challenges through data-driven insights.

ITD partnered with the Community Action and Human Services Department (CAHSD) to enhance the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) application process. LIHEAP is a federally funded initiative that supports low-income households with cooling and heating expenses. By optimizing the LIHEAP process, Miami-Dade County aims to provide faster, more accessible financial relief for qualified residents, including crisis assistance when needed.

“Being a part of The Opportunity Project for Cities has deepened our connection with the community and allowed us to rethink essential processes,” said ITD Innovation Manager Jorge Valens. “Working alongside Google.org technologists and utilizing open data, we’ve made the LIHEAP application simpler and more accessible for Miami-Dade’s most vulnerable households. We look forward to building on this foundation and seeing the positive impact firsthand.”

Demo Day participants shared insights from their 20-week journey, during which they collaborated with community members to understand needs, design solutions and test their products to ensure they aligned with residents' priorities.

Miami-Dade County’s Director of Innovation Ana Chammas highlighted the role of collaboration in driving meaningful change. “This partnership has shown the power of local alliances and data-driven tools in transforming residents’ experiences. The insights gained through this program are invaluable as we continue innovating toward more efficient and equitable services,” Chammas added.
