Rudy Fernandez

Rudy Fernandez serves as executive vice president for university operations and external affairs and chief of staff to the president at the University of Miami. He is responsible for the leadership and strategic direction of a diversified portfolio of university business units including Audit and Compliance, Data Governance and Institutional Research, Development, Enrollment Management, Facilities Operations and Planning, Government and Community Relations, Office of the Secretary of the Board, University Communications, UHealth Marketing and Communications, and University Police.

As the executive leader for university operations and external affairs, Fernandez works closely with the Board of Trustees, the president, and the chief executive officer to advance organizational excellence through continuous improvement across the University’s areas of endeavor—education, research, health care, and athletics—while engaging with external stakeholders on its behalf. 
 
Prior to joining the University in 2007, Fernandez spent a decade in Washington, D.C. in various leadership roles in the federal government. He served as special assistant to the president in the George W. Bush White House. He also held senior positions in the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the Bush-Cheney Campaign. 

Fernandez earned a bachelor’s degree in government from Harvard University and an M.B.A. from the University of Miami. He is a member of Iron Arrow, the highest honor attained at UM, and the Orange Bowl Committee. He and his wife, Jennifer, are the proud parents of four children.
