Miami-Dade County Mayor declares local State of Emergency in anticipation of Hurricane Milton

In anticipation of potential impacts to Miami-Dade County due to Hurricane Milton, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava declared a Local State of Emergency, effective immediately. The Emergency Operations Center will be activated at a Level 2 starting Monday at 7:30 a.m. in order to coordinate preparations and mitigation efforts.  

Recently upgraded to a Category 1 Hurricane, Milton remains situated in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico and is moving east-northeast across the Gulf. Although the storm is not expected to directly impact Miami-Dade County until mid-week, residents should be aware that heavy rainfall and flooding are expected to be experienced this Sunday, due to a separate disturbance to the northeast of Milton. 

“Out of an abundance of caution, I’m declaring a local State of Emergency for Miami-Dade to ensure we’re fully prepared to respond to any challenges ahead,” Mayor Levine Cava stated. “This declaration allows us to mobilize resources swiftly, protect our residents and keep our community safe.” 
  
Miami-Dade County is under a Flood Watch from Sunday morning through Thursday morning as significant rainfall is anticipated over the next few days. The additional rainfall associated with Milton, expected in the mid-week period, could intensify the existing flood conditions. Miami-Dade County urges all residents to remain vigilant, as dangerous storm surges and damaging winds are becoming increasingly possible, though it is still too early to predict the exact level of impact for Miami-Dade.
