Senator René García assures community’s safety and wellbeing amidst Steward Health's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing

MIAMI-DADE – County Commissioner René García, representing the vibrant community of Hialeah, issues this statement in response to the recent announcement of Steward Health's filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Steward Health's ownership of Palmetto General Hospital and Hialeah Hospital raises concerns, but rest assured, my priority remains on the safety and welfare of our residents.

The announcement of Steward Health's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing impacts not only the two hospitals under their ownership in Hialeah but also affects four running hospitals countywide, Palmetto General Hospital, Hialeah Hospital, Coral Gables Hospital, and North Shore Medical Center. In response, our office has swiftly engaged in communications with state and local agencies to ensure that the quality of care and patient safety are not compromised during this period.

Drawing from a rich background as a seasoned hospital administrator, Senator René García brings unparalleled insight into the intricacies of healthcare management. Having chaired the State Senate Appropriations Committee on Health and Human Services, as well as serving as Chair of the Health Policy Committee, he possesses an unparalleled depth of knowledge and experience in navigating healthcare challenges. "Our residents rely on these hospitals for critical healthcare services, and it's imperative that we work diligently to safeguard their access to quality healthcare. Our residents deserve the best," stated the Senator.

It is essential for the community to understand the difference between Chapter 11 and Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Chapter 11 bankruptcy allows a company to restructure its debts and reorganize its business operations, aiming for financial recovery while continuing operations. On the other hand, Chapter 7 bankruptcy typically involves the liquidation of assets to pay off creditors and the cessation of business operations. The latter is not the case at Palmetto General Hospital or Hialeah Hospital.

Despite this financial restructuring, Senator García has been in direct communication with hospital administrators, who have provided assurances that there will be no interruption in services or staffing levels. "I will be closely monitoring the situation to ensure that our hospitals remain fully operational, and that patient care remains our top priority," emphasized the Senator.

In the face of uncertainty, Senator García reaffirms his commitment to the well-being of our community and pledges to keep residents informed as developments unfold. I’d also like to remind residents that Larkin Hospital and Mount Sinai are also valued healthcare options, ensuring continued access to excellent care within our community.
