Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera Aims to Keep America’s Enemies Out of MIA

(Miami-Dade, FL) – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera championed two resolutions aimed at enhancing security protocols at Miami International Airport (MIA) and other key infrastructure.

These resolutions, which were passed unanimously, respond to a recent visit to MIA by Cuban officials and reinforce the county's commitment to national and community safety. "These resolutions are a testament to our commitment to the safety and security of our community and nation," stated Commissioner Cabrera. “The recent negligence by the Biden administration, allowing Cuban government officials tours at Miami International Airport, is unacceptable and highlights a significant security lapse. This incident underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to protect our critical infrastructures. We call on Congress to swiftly pass the SAFE Act and support special provisions in the Homeland Security Appropriations Bill, ensuring such breaches are prevented in the future and maintaining the integrity of our national security protocols.”

Resolution Urging Congress to Pass the SAFE Act

The resolution urges the United States Congress to pass the Secure Airports From Enemies (SAFE) Act, which seeks to amend Title 49 of the United States Code to prohibit access by individuals representing or acting on behalf of countries supporting international terrorism to sensitive areas of airports. This act is essential for maintaining the security integrity of airports and protecting the nation against potential threats.

Resolution on Homeland Security Appropriations Bill

The resolution supports a provision in the Fiscal Year 2025 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill, which prohibits the use of appropriated funds to allow officials from countries designated as state sponsors of terrorism to observe, tour, visit, or confer with the employees of the Department of Homeland Security. This measure comes in the wake of tours provided to Cuban officials at Miami International Airport, underscoring a critical need for stricter oversight.

The resolutions approved by the Board of County Commissioners and have been transmitted to relevant federal officials to advocate for these essential security measures. Commissioner Cabrera's proactive stance and leadership on these issues reflect the urgency and importance of protecting both the local community and the broader national interests.
